Regarding Soundcards:

There are a wide variety of sound cards available for our computers these days. Soundblasters seem to be the most common, although Turtle Beach, Roland, Ensoniq, Yamaha, and many others have their own products. The quality of the actual "sounds" they produce varies drastically depending on whether they are 8, 16, or 32 bit, and if they use FM or wave synthesis to generate the sounds.

When listening to a midi (.mid) file on a computer, therefore, the actual sound produced varies tremendously according to which sound card is being heard. The quality of the drum sounds are different, the pianos, basses, guitars, strings, voices, flute, you name it, they all sound different from one sound card to another.

The instruments for a midi file are selected by the file's author, and are chosen using a particular sound card. When played through a different computer, it is hoped that these settings will sound good, but unfortunately, this is not always the case. To make a midi file sound its best on every system, the instrument settings should be chosen from the better, or in extreme cases, the more tolerable sounds of that particular card. Unfortunatly, there are many ugly noises on some sound cards which parade as horns, organs, strings, saxes, and other misnomers.

One common problem seems to be of notes cancelling each other out due to clashes with a simultaneous note, subsequent notes, or notes from other voices. Held notes in particular often drop out too soon, become altered, or are often lost. It is sufficient to say that computer sound cards have a long way to go before they get close to sounding like the real instruments.

Responses to this website have been overwhelmingly positive and encouraging so far. Still, I am concerned that people with different sound cards might not be getting the real sound of what I think, and everyone seems to agree, are some pretty fine midi specimens!

From what I've heard, they sound fine on the SoundBlaster and Turtle Beach cards. People have reported: "Sounds wonderful!" "Sounds great on my Soundblaster!" "Most Excellent Music!" "I'm bookmarked for life!!!" and even "No more going out and buying expensive CD's for me!!" I haven't heard any complaints, so things are evidently okay out there in Webworld.
